According to the Department of Agriculture at Gainesville/UF, despite the excitement of adding Industrial Hemp as a new alternative crop for Florida farmers, its profitability remains unproven. The infrastructure for processing the fiber is not yet in place, forcing producers to rethink the timing of their choice to plant hemp for fiber. It is their hope that someone will come along with the processors required to make this emerging new crop economically viable for production across Florida and the rest of the US.
Our system of grinding and mixing will bring that missing infrastructure to the producers. While it is not in our original mission of recycling and reclaiming wasted resources, it does happen to be what the hemp market needs to succeed. Discussion has begun on how a viable co-op could be introduced that would share a station dedicated to the hemp farmers where their crops would be measured and pro-rated for a share of the profits for the same building products made for the same customers already being served by GEC. We would provide the infrastructure and the market. The farmers provide the fiber. If not a co-op, other business models have also been discussed. Once the viability of the station is realized, additional stations with a different business model would be required.
